New or pre-owned Prestige yacht: what should UK buyers compare first?

Before comparing prices, UK buyers should examine warranty cover, VAT evidence, specification, condition and availability. A new yacht offers a warranty and control over options, while a pre-owned boat may be available sooner with extras already installed. Burton Waters Boat Sales offers brokerage and new boats across the Prestige range.

Start with the warranty

Prestige provides a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty covering parts, labour and most components, together with structural cover of up to 10 years for the hull and deck. M-Line models have 7-year structural cover. The warranties begin at handover, are transferable while valid and depend on maintenance and hull protection being completed through an authorised Prestige dealer. A pre-owned yacht may therefore retain manufacturer protection, but buyers should confirm the handover date, remaining cover, service records and whether the warranty conditions have been maintained. Review the warranty documents rather than relying on the yacht’s age.

Confirm the VAT position

For a yacht kept and used in UK waters, obtain documentary evidence of its UK VAT status. HMRC says suitable evidence can include the original invoice or receipt or proof that VAT was paid on importation. Registration alone does not establish VAT status. The linked Prestige F4.9 page describes a 2026 model but now states that the boat is no longer available. Buyers should request current stock, pricing and VAT details in writing rather than relying on an older listing.

Compare specification with availability

Buying new may allow choices over upholstery, electronics, engines and optional equipment, although stock boats have a fixed specification and factory orders can involve a wait. Pre-owned yachts are sold as equipped and may include upgrades that would be expensive to add later. The guide to the Prestige range helps identify suitable models, while the new versus used trade-offs explain broader considerations.
Compare New Pre-owned
Warranty Full cover from handover Remaining transferable cover, if valid
Specification Factory choices or fixed stock specification Fixed, with existing equipment
Availability Immediate stock or a factory lead time Often available once checks complete
Condition Unused, subject to handover checks Survey, service history and sea trial needed
Depreciation Greater early exposure is possible Some early depreciation may already be reflected
Depreciation varies with age, model, specification, condition and demand. A lightly used F4.9 may offer value, but condition and equipment should be assessed alongside price.

Budget beyond the purchase

Moorings, insurance, servicing, winter storage, fuel and upgrades affect annual ownership costs. For a used yacht, budget for an independent marine survey, engine inspection and sea trial. Burton Waters’ boat brokerage team can support the transaction and documentation. Buyers considering a smaller boat can explore the Jeanneau range or the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 1295 Coupe.
