Buying a Jeanneau for both inland waterways and coastal cruising: what to check before choosing a model
For Jeanneau inland cruising, air draught is often the deciding measurement. The Canal & River Trust publishes maximum dimensions for the Fossdyke Navigation of 21.3 m in length, 4.67 m in beam, 1.52 m in draught and 3.66 m in headroom. An older guide gives a lower headroom figure of 3.43 m. Smaller Merry Fishers may fit, but the 1095 Flybridge must not be assumed to clear those bridges: Jeanneau's published air draught is substantially higher than some dealer listings suggest. The River Witham through Lincoln is tighter still, with 2.74 m published headroom. Check your boat's actual height, the waterways and your coastal capabilities before choosing. These are planning limits, not a promise that any particular boat can pass safely at every water level or loading condition. What do you need to check first?
Begin with five checks: route dimensions, actual air draught, draught with the engines lowered, CE design category and the registration and insurance requirements. The route is the limiting factor because the bridges and locks cannot be adjusted to fit a yacht. Folding equipment may lower overall height, but only if permitted by its design. Our guide to Burton Waters Marina and the Fossdyke explains the connections towards Lincoln and the tidal Trent. Also check access to moorings and narrow approaches, since published maximum dimensions do not guarantee unrestricted passage throughout a waterway. What the waterways allow
The Canal & River Trust's Fossdyke Navigation page publishes the limits between Torksey and Lincoln. The River Witham has different restrictions. For Lincoln to Stamp End Lock, the Trust specifies 2.74 m headroom, including the section affected by Lincoln's High Bridge, or Glory Hole. Beyond Stamp End towards Boston Grand Sluice, its quoted headroom increases to 3.5 m. Water levels, fittings and the usable channel vary, so confirm actual clearance before travelling.| Waterway | Length | Beam | Draught | Headroom |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fossdyke Navigation | 21.3 m | 4.67 m | 1.52 m | 3.66 m (older guide: 3.43 m) |
| River Witham, Lincoln to Stamp End Lock | 22.86 m | 5.4 m | 1.52 m | 2.74 m |
How the Merry Fisher range measures up
The figures below are indicative manufacturer measurements for the generations listed, not a bridge-clearance certificate. Lengths sometimes include optional platforms, while air draught can vary with fitted radar, roof equipment or removable structures. Jeanneau's newer 1095 Series 2 models also differ from earlier boats. Before buying, obtain the exact boat's dimensions in its intended cruising configuration and ask the navigation authority about a suitable safety margin.| Model | Length overall | Beam | Hull draught | Air draught | CE category | Under Lincoln's bridge? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Merry Fisher 605 S2 | 5.66 m | 2.44 m | 0.45 m | 2.48 m | C-6 | Potentially, with checks |
| Merry Fisher 695 S2 | 7.45 m with options | 2.54 m | 0.50 m | 2.27–2.57 m | C-8 | Potentially, with checks |
| Merry Fisher 795 S2 | 8.14 m with options | 2.82 m | 0.58 m | 2.34 m | C-9 | Potentially, with checks |
| Merry Fisher 895 Series 2 | 9.44 m with options | 3.00 m | 0.68 m | 2.80–3.25 m | B-6 / C-10 | No, against 2.74 m |
| Merry Fisher 1095 | 10.45 m (earlier model) | 3.37 m | 0.69 m | 2.89–3.18 m | B-8 / C-10 | No |
| Merry Fisher 1095 Flybridge | 10.45 m (earlier model) | 3.37 m | 0.69 m | 3.54–4.22 m | B-7 / C-10 | No |
Which way to the sea: the Trent or the Witham?
There are two main routes from Burton Waters. Westbound, the Fossdyke reaches the tidal Trent at Torksey, followed northwards towards the Humber and North Sea. Eastbound, the route passes Lincoln and follows the Witham towards Boston and The Wash. The Lincoln passage imposes the much lower headroom restriction, making it more suitable for smaller boats. Heading towards Torksey avoids Lincoln's low bridge, but does not remove the need to investigate every downstream obstruction and tidal condition. The tidal Trent requires preparation. The Canal & River Trust requires Torksey Lock bookings by telephone at least 48 hours in advance and advises calling or radioing approximately 15 minutes before arrival. Tide, weather and flooding govern safe passage. The Trent can also produce the Aegir tidal bore in particular conditions. If you are unfamiliar with these waters, the RYA training centre can help develop your skills; our beginner's quick guide to boating provides an introduction. What to check for the coastal side
A boat's ability to clear a bridge is different from its suitability offshore. Three further checks matter.- CE category. The 605, 695 and 795 are category C models, generally intended for conditions up to Beaufort Force 6 and significant wave heights of 2 m. Some 895 and 1095 variants have category B ratings for specified numbers of people. Check your particular model, passenger limits and conditions rather than using the category as a forecast or a guarantee of safety.
- Engine layout. The 695 and 795 commonly use single outboards; the 895 and 1095 typically use twin installations. Twins provide redundancy if one engine fails, although they add maintenance costs. Our guide to single versus twin outboards explains the choices, while our servicing and repairs team can discuss maintenance.
- Fuel and range. Burton Waters quotes illustrative cruising ranges of approximately 120 miles for the 695, 150 miles for the 795 and 200 miles for the 895. Actual range varies with loading, sea state, speed and reserve fuel. Plan tidal passages using a conservative fuel margin, particularly on the Humber.
Do you need a licence, a certificate and insurance?
For inland use, you will usually need the navigation authority's boat licence or registration, appropriate insurance and evidence of safety compliance. The GOV.UK owning a boat guide describes a general minimum of £1 million third-party cover for powered craft. However, the Canal & River Trust's licence conditions require at least £2 million, so insure to the specific authority's current requirements. Also confirm that the policy covers coastal passages and tidal rivers. For a complete new boat, the Boat Safety Scheme says most participating authorities accept its builder's Declaration of Conformity instead of a Boat Safety Scheme certificate for the first four years. Afterwards, an examination and certificate are generally needed every four years unless exempt. Check a used boat's existing certificate and equipment before purchase. Check that the documents still match the vessel if it has been modified or re-engined. Our boat insurance partner can discuss cover. For skipper training and marine radio requirements, see what licence you need to drive a yacht.Which model suits which plan?
- Mostly the Fossdyke and Lincoln, with occasional coastal days: The 695 or 795 could suit, provided their fully equipped air draught clears the Witham safely. The 605 and 695 are also described as trailerable, subject to towing weight, trailer and vehicle requirements.
- Weekends involving the tidal Trent and Humber: The 895 offers two cabins, up to six berths and twin outboards. Its minimum published air draught exceeds Lincoln's 2.74 m restriction, so plan around the Torksey route.
- Longer stays mainly on the Fossdyke or Trent: The 1095 Coupé provides more space, subject to clearance checks. The 1095 Flybridge should not be assumed suitable for the Fossdyke; its air draught can exceed the published limit.
