Getting Your Boat Ready To Sell: The Paperwork And Prep That Protect Its Value
A clear document file and a well-maintained boat make a sale easier. Missing title, VAT, servicing or compliance records create uncertainty, so start preparing early enough to find documents and deal with obvious faults. Our guide to
selling your yacht successfully covers the sale itself; this is the groundwork.
Build The Document File First
Buyers will usually want evidence of ownership, VAT history, servicing and any finance or mortgage affecting the boat. Registration helps, but does not prove VAT status by itself.
| Document |
Why it matters |
| Bills of sale/title records |
Helps demonstrate the ownership chain |
| UK Ship Register certificate |
Records Part 1 or Part 3 registration where applicable |
| VAT evidence |
Original invoice/receipt or import evidence is strongest |
| Declaration of Conformity and craft identification |
Relevant where RCR/RCD requirements apply |
| Service records and invoices |
Supports the maintenance history |
| BSS certificate |
May be needed for licensing on relevant inland waterways |
| Finance settlement evidence |
Helps confirm secured finance has been cleared |
HMRC says an original invoice or receipt, or evidence of VAT paid on import, can support UK VAT status. A registration document alone does not prove it. The RYA also recommends gathering Bills of Sale, registration documents, compliance paperwork and service records.
Part 1 of the UK Ship Register can record ownership and marine mortgages. Part 3, the Small Ships Register, mainly provides evidence of UK nationality for eligible small pleasure vessels abroad.
The Prep That Actually Pays
Prioritise maintenance and presentation:
- Arrange a service by a named engineer where due and keep the invoice.
- Fix small faults, clean lockers and bilges, remove clutter and address damp or odours.
- If appropriate, polish and antifoul before photographs, particularly after winter storage.
Do not assume major upgrades will repay their cost. Re-engining, upholstery and electronics may improve a boat, but resale value depends on the model and buyer. Our comparison of
new and used boats explains the trade-off. Safety or survey-related problems such as seacocks, gas faults, corrosion or structural concerns should be investigated rather than left for negotiation. It helps to view the boat as a
first time buyer would.
Choose The Route That Fits Your Timing
Brokerage can reach a wider pool of buyers, but neither the highest price nor a particular sale time is guaranteed.
Part exchange can simplify an upgrade because your current boat forms part of the next purchase. A
cash offer prioritises speed and certainty; Burton Waters says qualifying direct purchases can be completed within seven days.
There is no dependable rule that February always sells better than September. Demand varies by boat type, price, condition and market. Our update that
bigger motor cruisers has stayed steady provides recent context.
If You Are Trading Up
If you are moving into the
Merry Fisher range with a
Merry Fisher 795 or
895 Series 2, stepping up to a
Prestige F4.3 or
Prestige F5.7, or comparing
used boats, coordinating both transactions can reduce the risk of owning two boats at once or being left without one.
FAQs
How long does it take to sell a boat in the UK?
There is no reliable national average. Brokerage depends on model, price, condition and demand. Part exchange or a dealer purchase can be quicker.
Do you need a survey to sell a boat?
Usually not as a legal requirement. The buyer commonly commissions and pays for a survey, while lenders or insurers may impose their own requirements. A recent seller’s survey does not prevent another survey.
Does a boat need a Boat Safety Scheme certificate to be sold?
Not simply to complete a sale. A valid BSS certificate may be required for registration or licensing on waterways covered by the scheme, subject to exemptions. Certificates are normally valid for four years.
What paperwork proves VAT has been paid?
HMRC identifies the original invoice or receipt and evidence of VAT paid on import as key documents. Previous Bills of Sale and registration documents can support history, but do not themselves prove VAT status.
